Drew Goddard Hopeful That Sinister Six Movie Could Still Happen

The shelved Sinister Six movie could still happen under the new Spider-Man deal

Before Sony and Marvel Studios reached a deal about Spider-Man earlier this year, the company was still developing a number of titles for their franchise. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was on the docket along with a Venom solo film, a female-led spin-off, and a Sinister Six movie. The Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard was writing and directing the film, which was shelved after the new agreement came around, but speaking with io9, Goddard is hopeful that it could one day happen as part of the Marvel plan.

“My vision of that movie was a summer annual. So you didn’t have to worry about continuity. It was just, ‘We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.’ I intentionally wanted a movie that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think.”

Goddard also went on to praise the Sony/Marvel deal as a fan of the source materiel.

“The tricky part about all this is I love this plan. I love that you get to see Spider-Man in Marvel movies. I think that’s a great thing. I’m on board with that decision because as a fan that’s what I want. So who knows what the future holds? This is Hollywood, man, you’ve gotta play the long game.”

Tom Holland will star as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, making his cinematic debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. He’ll be joined by Marisa Tomei as Aunt May. Set to be directed by Jon Watts, the solo Spider-Man movie will be written by Vacation writers and directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. The film will swing into theaters on July 28, 2017.
