Another Ghostbusters film is reportedly in development, though this time they’ll go animated
If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, there will be no shortage of people to call if Sony has their way. The Tracking Board brings word that Sony is developing an animated Ghostbusters film in addition to its two already planned live-action features.
The outlet reports that the film will follow a similar logline to the original film, following a group of scientists fending off ghosts and ghouls in Manhattan. Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two films in the series, will reportedly produce the film along with Tom Pollock. Check back here for any confirmation on the matter as we learn it.
This won’t be the first time that the Ghostbusters will be animated either, with the animated series The Real Ghostbusters having aired from 1986 to 1991 and Extreme Ghostbusters in 1997.
Paul Feig’s upcoming Ghostbusters, which just wrapped shooting last week, is set to debut in theaters on July 15, 2016. The film stars Kristen Wiig as Erin Gilbert, Kate McKinnon as Jillian Holtzman, Melissa McCarthy as Abby Yates and Leslie Jones as Patty Tolan. In addition, Chris Hemsworth will appear as the new secretary along with Andy Garcia as the Mayor of New York City, Michael K. Williams as a character named “Hawkins,” Matt Walsh as a character named “Rourke,” and Neil Casey as the film’s villain. Original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and Ernie Hudson will all cameo in the film as well.
Beyond Feig’s film, a counterpart to the 2016 reboot is in development with Channing Tatum set to star. Iron Man 3 scribe Drew Pearce wrote the script which will be produced by Captain America: Civil War directors Anthony and Joe Russo. No release date has currently been set.
