J.J. Abrams Talks Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Starkiller Base, Domhnall Gleeson on General Hux

Much like Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata being featured on the main Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster, another interesting piece of the episode VII puzzle is present, the deadly Starkiller Base, the primary weapon of the film’s First Order. Speaking with EW, director J.J. Abrams confirmed that it is indeed the Death Star follow up on the poster and that it’s certainly seen as a successor to the Empire’s original battle stations.

“It is very much — and it’s acknowledged as such in the movie — apparently another Death Star,” Abrams says. “But what it’s capable of, how it works, and what the threat is, is far greater than what the Death Star could have done. Starkiller Base is another step forward, technologically speaking, in terms of power.”

Potentially sitting at Starkiller Base is none other than Domhnall Gleeson’s character in the film, General Hux, a high-ranking member of the First Order and mostly a mystery to fans, until now.

“There’s an air of superiority, and being better than those people around you,” Gleeson says of the character. “He’s pretty ruthless. A strong disciplinarian would be a mild way of putting it….You don’t get that high up in your life that quickly unless you’re pretty ruthless. You have to put a few people down on the way to get there.”

Gleeson goes on to reveal that, despite being on the same side, he and Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren aren’t on the best of terms.

“He’s kind of opposite Kylo Ren,” he says. “They have their own relationship, which is individual and unusual. One of them is strong in different ways than the other. They’re both vying for power.”

Opening in theaters on December 18, 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, and features a new generation of swashbuckling heroes and shadowy villains, as well as the return of fan-favorite smugglers, princesses, and Jedi.
