Geoff Johns Teases the Legion of Super-Heroes on Television

Geoff Johns says that a Legion of Super-Heroes tease is coming to one of the DC Comics television series

DC Comics‘ 30th century superhero team will be getting some small screen love. Reporting from the Television Critics Association winter press tour, TV Line brings word that the Legion of Super-Heroes will get a tease of sorts on an upcoming episode of one of the four live action DC series (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”).

“Keep watching,” DC Entertainment CCO Geoff Johns announced during today’s DC television presentation. “…You’ll see a hint of the Legion on one of our shows.”

Created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, the Legion of Super-Heroes made their first comic book appearance in 1958’s Adventure Comics #247 in a story titled, simply enough, “The Legion of Super-Heroes”. In it, a young Clark Kent (who is then known as Superboy), is contacted by three teenagers (Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl) from ten centuries in the future. They bring Superboy to the 30th century to become a member of their team, founded with the inspiration of Superman’s legendary heroism.

Over the decades, the Legion of Super-Heroes roster has expanded dramatically and the team even previously made it to live action television on a 2009 episode of “Smallville.” That episode, which was actually scripted by Johns, was titled “Legion” and featured, in addition to Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl, both Brainiac 5 and Chameleon Boy.

“I love the Legion,” Johns went on to tease regarding a bigger Legion of Super-Heroes appearance down the road. “They’re underused and hopefully we’ll get them out there soon.”

Where do you think the Legion of Super-Heroes “hint” will be? “Supergirl” certainly makes a lot of sense given the Legion’s comic book history, but so does the time traveling “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”. After all, we learned earlier this week that Jonah Hex will make an appearance at the tail end of the series. Could a visit to the future also be in store?
