Mike Dougherty‏ Teases Connection to the Original Godzilla for 2019 Sequel

Mike Dougherty teases connection to the original Godzilla for 2019 sequel

Production continues on the upcoming Godzilla sequel from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros., and director Mike Dougherty has revealed a new photo from the set that features an interesting Easter egg connecting it to the original film.

Dougherty’s photo shows what Godzilla fans will recognize as the Oxygen Destroyer from the 1954 film. Developed by the film’s Dr. Serizawa, the device removes oxygen from whatever body of water it is placed in and was used to destroy Godzilla in in the feature. It’s worth pointing out that Ken Watanabe does play a Dr. Serizawa in both the 2014 film and its upcoming sequel, but is a different character from the original. Should this be a weapon he creates in the film or the original bomb that an ancestor of his created back in the 1950s remains to be seen.

Directed by Dougherty (Trick ‘r TreatKrampus), the Godzilla sequel also stars Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga (Up in the AirThe Conjuring films), and Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), both reprising their Godzilla roles, plus Kyle Chandler (The Wolf of Wall StreetManchester by the Sea), Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) in her feature film debut, Bradley Whitford (Get Out), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Aisha Hinds (Star Trek Into Darkness), and Golden Globe nominee Zhang Ziyi (Memoirs of a GeishaCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the sequel is currently scheduled for release in March 2019, and will be distributed in 3D and 2D and in select IMAX theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros.
