Netflix Superhero Film Past Midnight to Star Keanu Reeves

Deadline reports that Netflix has just ordered Past Midnight, a vigilante superhero film, with plans to get Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix) as the lead. Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) will be directing the movie based on a script written by TJ Fixman. Anthony and Joe Russo (Captain America: Civil War) will serve as the producers.

The concept for a “vigilante superhero” isn’t the most original one, even for Netflix, as the streaming platform already has Marvel’s The Punisher series with an antihero that has no problems with killing to deliver a twisted sense of justice. It should be interesting to see this take on no-holds-barred superheroics realized in a more compact storytelling form, presumably in a 2+ hour feature-length film.

Reeves himself is famous for playing a killer with a code in the John Wick movies, which is probably why Netflix is gunning for the actor. Fans will be seeing him reprise the role for the third John Wick film set to come out in 2019.

Writer TJ Fixman, while not having as much experience making scripts for movies, has written extensively for video games, specifically the Ratchet & Clank series for the PlayStation consoles as well as its movie adaptation.

Rick Famuyiwa got plenty of attention for his directorial work on Dope, and has also just been tapped for writing and directing duties on Black Hole, a fantasy thriller based on the Charles Burn graphic novel of the same name, to be released by New Regency and Plan B.

Repping Fixman are WME, Grandview and Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal Laviolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman. Repping Famuyiwa are WME, Oasis Media Group, and Del, Shaw, Moonves, Tanaka, Finkelstein & Lezcano.
