James Gunn Will Not Be Rehired For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

According to Variety, Disney and Marvel have decided to firmly stand by their decision to not rehire Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn back for the third installment. The decision was finalized after Gunn’s meeting with Disney’s chairman Alan Horn, which the outlet described as a civil and professional meeting.

The outlet also reports that even though Marvel president Kevin Feige wasn’t able to the attend the meeting because he was out of town, Feige also stands by the decision of not reinstating Gunn back to Guardians 3. However, the studio is reportedly still considering using the script that Gunn penned for the film, the absence of which is a deal breaker for co-star Dave Bautista.

It was previously reported that Marvel was trying to convince Disney to potentially re-sign Gunn in the wake of the controversy. Meanwhile, rival studios including Warner Bros. are said to be very eager to approach Gunn with projects once his exit from Marvel/Disney is fully executed. Essentially, this means that Gunn’s career will only suffer a minor hiccup from his current situation.

Back in July, Walt Disney Studios dismissed Gunn from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to Gunn’s past controversial tweets. Despite this, the Guardians of the Galaxy‘s main cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn and Bautista, who all still supported him and asked for Disney to reinstate Gunn as the film’s director.

Earlier this year, director James Gunn revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be released in 2020. Filming was scheduled to start this Fall in Atlanta, but it is unknown if the film will keep to this schedule. The third Guardians film was meant to be the final outing for the original team lineup, and set up future films in the cosmic arena of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
