Hans Zimmer Explains Why He Signed On for Wonder Woman 1984

One of the most exciting bits of news surrounding Patty Jenkin’s highly anticipated Wonder Woman 1984 was the announcement that legendary composer Hans Zimmer was returning to the DCEU to score the sequel. It was also a bit shocking, as Zimmer had gone on record saying he was done with superhero flicks back in 2016.

Yet, here we are, two years later, and the man has not only signed on for Wonder Woman 1984, but the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix as well.

Recently, the Academy-Award winning composer discussed his decision to return to the world of superheroes with Collider (via Cinema Blend). Zimmer admits to feeling a tad apprehensive to take the reins from Wonder Woman composer Rupert Gregson-Williams, but ultimately couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

“It was odd say to say ‘yes’ to because my friend, Rupert, I had worked really hard at getting Rupert the job on the first one. But remember the motif, the Wonder Woman theme is mine, actually. I wrote that damn thing. And we had done it live and it became more and more interesting. I just thought it was important to sort of finish it. And Patty [Jenkins] phoned me, and she had a really interesting idea as well. Again, the story she is going to tell, or she is probably right now on a set telling, it’s a story you want to be a part of.”

Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big screen adventure finds her facing an all-new foe: The Cheetah. As previously announced, the film stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Kristen Wiig in the role of the Super-Villain The Cheetah, as well as Pedro Pascal. Chris Pine also returns as Steve Trevor. Natasha Rothwell was recently cast in an unknown role in the project.

Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman, Monster) returns to direct the sequel, while Jenkins, Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Stephen Jones and Gal Gadot are producing the film. Rebecca Roven Oakley, Richard Suckle, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada are the executive producers.

Joining her behind the scenes are several members of Jenkins’ Wonder Woman team, including director of photography Matthew Jensen, Oscar-nominated production designer Aline Bonetto (Amélie), and Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (Topsy-Turvy). Oscar-nominated editor Richard Pearson (United 93) will cut the film.

Production will take place in Washington, D.C., Alexandria, Virginia, and in the UK, Spain and the Canary Islands.

Set to open in theaters November 1, 2019, Wonder Woman 1984 is based on the character created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
