Fans were divided when director Zack Snyder cast Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Affleck, then 42, was the oldest actor to play the Dark Knight on the big screen. However, Snyder’s plans for the film were enough to convince Affleck to renege on his earlier promise to never play another superhero after Daredevil. Now that Affleck has retired his cape for good, Snyder is weighing in on his decision.
via Newsarama, Snyder heaped praise on Affleck’s grizzled take on the character in a post on his Vero account. He also quoted Affleck’s voiceover monologue from Batman v. Superman’s opening scene: “There was a time above… a time before… there were perfect things… diamond absolutes. But things fall… things on earth. And what falls… is fallen. In the dream, it took me to the light. A beautiful lie…Best Batman ever. Thank you for blessing me with that f***ing glorious chin and an amazing heart.”

Although Batman v. Superman and Justice League polarized viewers, Affleck’s performance was largely considered a high point in both films. Affleck confirmed that he was stepping away from the DC Extended Universe during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Now, the search is on for his replacement in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman standalone feature. We can only speculate about which actors Warner Bros. might be looking at for the role. But if the studio wants to maintain the film’s summer 2021 release date, the casting process will have to get underway relatively soon.
