Writers Explains Why Captain America Got Short-Changed in Infinity War

Endgame Co-Writer Says Captain America ‘Steps Forward’ for New Movie

After Avengers: Infinity War, some fans were disappointed that Chris Evans’ Captain America took a backseat in the movie, citing how few lines the Star Spangled man had in the sequel. Speaking with io9, co-writer Stephen McFeely revealed why this ended up happening, and how Endgame will be different.

When I was talking about [Infinity War], I very often said that sometimes we gave ourselves permission to tell more story for a character in Endgame than in Infinity War,” McFeely said. “Cap’s a great example. People counted Cap’s lines [in Infinity War] and he had like 20. So Cap steps forward, as you can probably tell, pretty dramatically in Endgame. And that’s because we knew some people had more interesting stories after [the Snap] than before it. Cap and Natasha are good examples of that. So I wouldn’t say we shortchange anybody [in Endgame], but part of the reason there are only [13] people on that poster was to go deeper with fewer.

Last year’s Avengers: Infinity War saw the titular superhero team take the fight to Thanos in order to stop his attempt at exterminating half of the universe’s population with the Infinity stones. But it was to no avail, as he was able to successfully collect them all and snap his fingers, wiping out half of all life from existence in a cloud of ash.

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.

Confirmed cast members for the fourth Avengers film so far includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Sean Gunn, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Katherine Langford and Josh Brolin.

Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated film will hit the theaters on April 26.
