Jon Watts Explains Peter’s Relationship With Nick Fury in Far From Home
Peter Parker’s often heated interactions with Nick Fury were a recurring theme in Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man comics. Back then, Fury’s appearance was based on Samuel L. Jackson’s likeness years before he started playing the character in the MCU. And with Jackson’s Fury about to rain on Peter’s summer vacation in Spider-Man: Far From Home, it looks like their contentious relationship will carry over to the big screen.
According to director John Watts (via ComicBook.com), bringing Spider-Man and Fury together was something he always wanted to do. And yes, the characters will definitely find themselves at odds with each other as they combat the interdimensional threat posed by the Elementals.
“I always wanted to put our idealistic teenage hero Peter Parker against a jaded world weary super spy like Nick Fury,” said Watts. “I always thought that would be such a great combination of conflict and relationship to explore. That was something that was in my very, very, very first pitch and my very first meeting at Marvel. I was like, ‘I want to see this kid go up against this bad motherf***er.’ You know? And Tony Stark is like the cool, supportive rich uncle. Nick Fury is more like the mean, new stepdad. And I just thought it would be really fun to see those two worlds collide.”

As we saw in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter isn’t exactly big on following orders. Disobeying Tony Stark is one thing. But from the sound of it, defying the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. won’t be as simple.
“One of the themes we wanted to play with was youth,” continued Watts. “It’s the timeless theme of these coming-of-age movies. Why do adults operate in the grey? Spider-Man is like, ‘This is easy. Let’s just do the right thing,’ or ‘Let’s just tell people what’s going on and everyone will be okay,’ and Nick Fury’s like, ‘That’s not how the world works, kid.’ He just gets wrapped up in this sort of spy adventure, being driven by Fury and getting more and more caught between how he wants to operate and how he’s being told he should operate.”
