Why Peter Jackson Turned Aquaman Down Twice

It seems that The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn will likely be the only comics-based movie involving Peter Jackson. Lately, the Lord of the Rings trilogy director has been working on a documentary about World War I, but in the meantime has received other interesting working offers too. In a recent interview with Empire, Jackson revealed that former Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara failed to get him on 2018’s Aquaman twice…because he isn’t “a superhero guy.”

“He said, ‘Are you a fan of Aquaman?’ I said, ‘No.’ Six months later: ‘Peter, are you a fan of Aquaman?’ I said, ’No, Kevin, I already told you this’,” Jackson said. “I’m not a superhero guy. I read Tintin… Look, films are hard. I only want to make something that I have a deep passion for.”

More recently, The Hobbit trilogy director produced and wrote the 2018 box-office bomb Mortal Engines. Subsequently, he took a sabbatical from directing theatrical films.

“I don’t really anticipate making another theatrical film for a year or two,” he noted.

The last theatrical film directed by Jackson is the 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the third and final installment in the three-part film adaptation based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit.
