HBO Boss Rules Out Direct Game of Thrones Sequels

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the Game of Thrones finale!

Now that HBO’s epic drama Game of Thrones has reached its climax in the highly anticipated series finale, many fans around the world are hoping to spend additional time with the characters they loved for nearly a decade. One of the characters whom viewers might like to see in a spin-off is Arya Stark. In the last moments of the series, she sailed off to discover if any land lies West of Westeros.

Speaking with Deadline, though, HBO programming president Casey Bloys ruled out any direct spin-off from Game of Thrones.

“I understand where that comes from, I totally get it,” he said. “But in terms of wanting to be careful not overdoing it or not killing the goose that lays the golden egg, Dan and David’s show as it stands in eight seasons, I want to leave it as its own work of art and not have shows directly, having Arya do that. I think it’s best to try the prequels in other areas of George’s massive universe — just feels like the right thing to do, let the show stand on its own.”

Additionally, Bloys said that at the moment HBO is working on just one Game of Thrones prequel series, whose pilot production is starting in June.

“Here is what I will tell you,” he stated. “I wanted to get through the final season and let that stand as a cultural moment. We have the pilot starting in June and then we will decide whether to want to do another one or not. I’m letting those things happen before we decide whether to do another one or not. “
