Simon Kinberg Says the New Mutants Reshoots Will Happen This Year

In the comic book realm, The New Mutants were introduced as the next generation of the X-Men. Many of the team members actually went on to join the X-Men. But in live-action, the team hasn’t had much luck. Director Josh Boone shot the film, but it’s been constantly delayed from its original April 2018 release date. Disney recently pushed New Mutants back yet again, to April 3, 2020.

While promoting his new X-Men film, Dark Phoenix, director and producer Simon Kinberg told Digital Spy that the New Mutants reshoots will happen in 2019.

“What’s happening is we’re gonna do reshoots this year on that film and it has a new release date from Disney,” said Kinberg. “Part of it was figuring out what the reshoots were gonna be, the pick-ups, and the other part of it was getting that cast back together.”

Kinberg also indicated that it has been difficult to find a window of time to reunite the cast.

“For all of these movies, Marvel’s really brilliant at scheduling pick-ups into their budget and schedule so it’s all prepared, and we have never been that smart,” admitted Kinberg. “For us, we’re always scrambling to get these actors back together so they’re all in the same place at the same time…So that will be some time this year, we’ll do our pick-ups and the movie will come out.”

Earlier this year, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams spoke out about her frustration with the New Mutants delays. According to Williams, neither she nor her co-star, Charlie Heaton, had any idea when the reshoots would occur.

Anya Taylor-Joy, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga co-star alongside Williams and Heaton. Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz’s “The Demon Bear Saga” is said to be the primary inspiration for the film.
