Here’s How Robert Pattinson Won the Role of The Batman

Director Matt Reeves made his choice for The Batman last week with Twilight’s Robert Pattinson. And while not everyone is happy with the decision, he still feels it was the right one. But today, some interesting details about the decision have come to light, thanks to some new information from The Hollywood Reporter.

Surprisingly enough, the casting process for finding a new Batman went a lot smoother than Warner Bros. originally expected. Reeves already had a clear idea of who he wanted for the role, between Pattison and X-Men actor Nicholas Hoult. He felt that a younger Batman was the way to go, compared to a much older portrayal, as previous movies went.

“He is written as around 30 years old, and the story is neither another rehashing of his origin nor the tale of a seasoned crimefighter ruling Gotham City,” the report notes. “He is Bruce Wayne still trying to find his footing on his way to becoming the genius detective,” it continues. In a way, it kind of relates to the route that the Gotham TV series went, before that concluded its run earlier this year.

Last month, Pattinson and Hoult went into testing for the role in Burbank, both trying on the iconic suit.

“Pattinson and Hoult put on a suit from a previous Batman movie, as has become customary in the Bat-test process,” the article explained. “(Christian Bale, before landing Batman Begins, performed his test in the suit used by Val Kilmer in 1995’s Batman Forever, for instance.) Did they embody the character? How did they eyes look and act? Is there a specialness to them? Those were the questions Reeves and the studio wanted answered.”

Apparently, one insider explained that Reeves was looking for something very specific. “He knew what he was looking for.”

The team spoke over the Memorial Day weekend when it came to deciding what they wanted. Once they debated, they made their final decision with Pattinson. “The Batman who would lead the studio into the 2020s had been found.”

Even though some of the fans aren’t exactly happy over his casting, Reeves has confidence that the actor will lead the hero into the next generation. They’ll find out when The Batman opens on June 25, 2021.
