Maxim Baldry Cast in Amazon’s Lord of the Rings Series

Amazon continues to keep mum on what they have planned for their upcoming Lord of the Rings series. Regardless, the casting process is still ongoing. According to Collider, the show has just scored the third addition to its cast in the form of English actor Maxim Baldry.

Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay began casting for the series over the summer. Baldry will join the previously-announced Markella Kavenagh and Will Poulter on the show. And just like with Kavenagh and Poulter, this latest revelation didn’t share any pertinent details about Baldry’s character. Regardless, his role is apparently “significant.”

Baldry recently garnered some recognition for playing Viktor Goraya on HBO’s six-part miniseries Years and Years, which premiered in May. Before that, he appeared on several episodes of the British soap opera Hollyoaks and had a recurring role on HBO’s Rome. Baldry also recently wrote, directed, and starred in his own short film, Melodie Saviour.

Once casting is completed, the series will begin production in New Zealand, which has been a stand-in for Middle-Earth since Peter Jackson kicked off the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy in 2001. Of course, this new project is taking on a shape that’s very different from Jackson’s movies. Rumors continue to persist about when the show might take place. However, fans keep pointing to a message posted by the series’ official Twitter account that reads, “Welcome to the Second Age.” Since this refers to the time period when the Rings of Power were created, many have speculated that the show picks up before The Fellowship of the Ring.

Payne and McKay are working with consultant (and Game of Thrones veteran) Bryan Cogman to develop the series. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director is helming several episodes. No release date is set.
