Freeform Cancels Cloak & Dagger After Two Seasons

It looks like Freeform’s Thursday night lineup just got a lot less Marvel-ous. According to Deadline, the network has decided not to renew Cloak & Dagger for a third season. This effectively ends the MCU’s presence on Freeform.

Cloak & Dagger premiered on the network in the summer of 2018 and concluded its sophomore season this past May. Both seasons earned decent reviews from critics, but these didn’t help the show’s ratings. Apparently, the last season’s viewership dropped 40% from the first, which likely contributed to its cancellation. Deadline also notes that the options on the series’ cast members expired this week as well.

“We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told,” Freeform said in a new statement. “We are also grateful to our incredible talent Oliva Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and we are hopeful that we can find another project together.”

This news comes a few days after it was reported that Jeph Loeb was on his way out as the head of Marvel Television. Since Cloak & Dagger was one of several shows under Loeb’s purview, cancellations like this were to be expected. Previously, Loeb endured the cancellations of all five Marvel series that aired on Netflix. Now that Marvel TV is under Kevin Feige’s command as a result of his new role as Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer, it sounds like the House of Ideas’ small-screen division is about to undergo a radical shift.
