The Devil Comes To L.A. In New Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Trailer

Over the course of three seasons, Showtime took its viewers on a twisted journey through Victorian England in Penny Dreadful. Next month, Showtime will spin even more gothic horror tales in its upcoming spinoff series, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Now, Showtime has shared a new trailer for the series that sets the stage for horror in Los Angeles circa 1938.

From the gorgeous desert vistas to the dusty street brawls, City of Angels looks like it will be one of those shows that could be worth watching for the cinematography alone. Of course, original Penny Dreadful creator John Logan is back as well. The series kicks off with a grisly murder case, which causes police captain Ned Vanderhoff (Brent Spiner) to openly worry about a race war. But there’s something far darker in play within the City of Angels.

Daniel Zovatto stars as Tiago Vega, a religious skeptic who struggles to square his role as an LAPD detective with his Mexican-American heritage at a time when racial tensions are poised to boil over. Nathan Lane co-stars as his seasoned partner, Lewis Michener. The trailer also gives us new glimpses at Natalie Dormer’s Magda, a supernatural demon with the ability to shapeshift into anyone she desires.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels debuts on Sunday, April 26 on Showtime.
