George R.R. Martin Always Wanted a Game of Thrones-Westworld Crossover

Warning: spoilers from the latest episode of Westworld ahead!

The latest episode of HBO’s Westworld saw the brief appearance of a couple of familiar faces to Game of Thrones fans. The showrunners of the fantasy show David Benioff and Dan Weiss portrayed a couple of Delos technicians discussing how to bring a dragon to Costa Rica. Speaking with VarietyWestworld showrunner Jonathan Nolan revealed that this is hardly the first time someone planned a Game of Thrones-Westworld crossover. According to Nolan, A Song of Ice and Fire writer George R.R. Martin is a big fan of the show and he already pitched a crossover idea.

“George had consistently since the first season said, “We’ve got to do a tie-in with Game of Thrones.” People forget that George was originally a TV writer and he came up in the TV world in which you’d occasionally have these crossover shows, which the fans would f—ing freak out over,” Nolan said.

In 1973’s Westworld movie, Delos featured a Medieval World. Per Martin, that scenario would have perfectly fit with a Game of Thrones story.

“If he lived in Los Angeles, we would surely have insisted that he come and hang out on our set as well. But the crossover with the existing Medieval World in the original [Westworld] movie [released in 1973] was just irresistible. And the amount of people, starting with George, who over the years had pitched some version of a crossover. We just — we couldn’t resist. And [David and Dan] were incredibly good sports about coming down.”

Nolan also confirmed that the dragon from Westworld Episode 3.02 was really Drogon. Thanks to an agreement with Pixamundo, they got Daenerys’s creature from “Season 4 or Season 5” of the fantasy show.

The next episode of Westworld will air on March 29. What did you think about D&D’s cameo? Would you like to see a larger Game of ThronesWestworld crossover? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
