Report: Sam Raimi May Have Confirmed That He’s Joined Doctor Strange 2

Earlier this year, director Scott Derrickson dropped out of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness over creative differences with Marvel. Subsequently, reports also emerged that Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi was in talks to replace Derrickson. Thus far, Marvel has yet to make Raimi’s selection official. However, Raimi may have just confirmed the news himself.

While speaking with our sister site, ComingSoon, Raimi was asked about the Doctor Strange reference he dropped in Spider-Man 2. His reply appeared to suggest his involvement with the sequel.

“[Doctor Strange] was so original, but when we had that moment in Spider-Man 2, I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie,” said Raimi. “So it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie. I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project.”

Raimi’s reply falls short of a full confirmation. But the implication seems to be clear. Marvel has yet to comment on this report.

Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Stephen Strange for the sequel. Additionally, Elizabeth Olsen will portray Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, and the events of WandaVision will play into the Doctor Strange sequel. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Benedict Wong are also likely to return as Mordo and Wong, respectively. However, Rachel McAdams is reportedly not reprising her role as Doctor Christine Palmer. The Loki series will also tie in with In the Multiverse of Madness, and showrunner Michael Waldron will rewrite the film’s script. Whether Tom Hiddleston will appear as Loki remains to be seen.

Until recently, the Doctor Strange sequel was on schedule to film in June. However, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic may disrupt those plans.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on November 5, 2021.
