James Cameron Feels Positive That COVID-19 Won’t Affect Avatar 2 Release Date

Hollywood kingpin James Cameron believes that the worst of the COVID-19 situation is already behind us. At least, as far as his upcoming Avatar sequels are concerned. Just a couple of months ago production for Avatar 2 had to stop due to the global health emergency. But speaking with Empire, Cameron seemed pretty optimistic about the fact that Avatar sequels will resume production soon.

“New Zealand seems to have been very effective in controlling the virus and their goal is not mitigation, but eradication, which they believe that they can do with aggressive contact tracing and testing,” he said. “So there’s a very good chance that our shoot might be delayed a couple of months, but we can still do it. So that’s good news.”

The COVID-19  situation is still dramatic in several countries around the world. There are a few places that seemed to have been less affected by the pandemic, though. New Zealand is one, given that they had only 1,497 cases and 21 deaths recorded. Cameron’s words echo the recent New Zealand Film Commission’s declarations that some film and TV productions “are already safely underway.”

The other good news is that part of the work could go on even in social distancing times. But Cameron confessed that he doesn’t much like working from home.

“We’ve got everybody – everybody at Weta Digital and Lightstorm – working from home to the extent that that is possible,” he added. “But my work is on the stage doing the virtual cameras and so on, so I can do a bit of editing, but it’s not great for me.”

If Cameron is right, fans are going to watch Avatar 2 in theaters starting December 17, 2021. Should everything go according to the plans, we will see a new Avatar movie every two years until 2027’s Avatar 5.
