Damon Lindelof Reacts to Watchmen’s Emmy Nods

HBO’s Watchmen series is no stranger to praise at this point. But yesterday, the show racked up even more prestige. Damon Lindelof’s continuation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel received a whopping 26 nominations at this year’s Emmy Awards. In the era of peak TV, the show will face some pretty stiff competition at the upcoming ceremony. However, Lindelof just enjoyed seeing people involved with all aspects of Watchmen recognized.

After the nominations were announced, Entertainment Weekly caught up with Lindelof to get his thoughts on Watchmen’s latest accolades. He admitted that he was proud to see most of the series’ cast on this list. But it was even better to see members of the behind-the-scenes crew get the love they deserve.

“The best part of it is not how many nominations,” said Lindelof. “But it’s all these people that I worked with over the course of two years, my creative partners; whether they worked in the camera department or the sound mixing or they were composing the score or doing the costumes. Obviously there’s a disproportionate amount of attention that’s put on the storytelling and the acting. But for so many people who put so many long hours and weekends into this, they really cared about this show.”

Naturally, Watchmen’s Emmys presence reignites discussion over Lindelof rethinking his plans to step away from a potential second season. Lindelof previously ruled out a return to the series at the beginning of this year. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that he’s sticking to his guns. Regardless, he’s still open to watching someone else take over.

“There’s not going to be an Ocean’s Twelve,” added Lindelof. “The big incentive for me would have been not to do more Watchmen but to work with that same group of artists, and they’ve all scattered to the wind. So I hope there’s more Watchmen. It’s one of those rare comic books that transcends what people think when you say comics.’ The idea can hold real cultural conversations or deep dives into American history, or criticisms of, of law and order — those things are evergreen. I really feel like that space is now open for others to come and play in, and I really look forward to what they do with it.”
