Game Designer Compares The Lord of the Rings: Gollum to Prince of Persia

Next year, fans will explore the Middle-earth like never before in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. The upcoming video game will follow the story of the sneaky creature in a game that will mix J.R.R. Tolkien’s narrative with Prince of Persia-like stealth-action sequences. In a recent interview with IGN, lead game designer Martin Wilkes revealed that Gollum will mix stealth with vertical climbing parkour like the Prince.

“If you want a reference you might think of it as similar to Prince of Persia,” said Wilkes. “It is mostly a non-combat game, but Gollum will be able to stealthily take out enemies. However, this will not be easy and always come with big risks. We want players to carefully weigh these encounters. After all, Gollum’s strengths lie in cunning not combat.”

Wilkes confirmed that Gollum won’t use weapons, but he will be able to “distract enemies with throwables.” That explains the fish that is dangling from his side as fans saw in the game’s teaser. Between the stealth sections, players will have to make decisions and dialogue choices, which they can choose from both the Sméagol and Gollum personalities.

Wilkes went on to add that the story will take up when Gollum decided to leave his cave under the Misty Mountains to go outside and look for Bilbo Baggins and the Ring. Unlucky for him, he ends up imprisoned in Mordor — confirming that the cave seen in the teaser is indeed Shelob’s Lair.

“Gollum’s overall goal in the game?” added Wilkes. “Well, that’s a bit more complicated. Obviously, Gollum wants to escape his captors and retake the Ring (and hopefully get his hands on some nice fish along the way). After some time, though, the Sméagol-side causes trouble and distractions and opens up new, conflicting goals that we cannot talk about yet.”

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will hit PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC somewhere in 2021.
