With the nearest open movie theaters hard to find, many fans look to home entertainment more than ever. If the kids are quarantined at home also, purchases, rather than rentals, start to look better and better for the inevitable repeat viewings. But with so many, it’s hard to know where to begin or what to afford. In this ongoing series, Superhero Hype takes a look at some of the better deals Amazon.com has running as of publication time. Please note that all deals are subject to change or sell out at any time based on supply and demand. These are the deals for Oct 5.
Star Wars Rebels: Season 1 [Blu-ray]
$17.99
Now that the final season of The Clone Wars has concluded, it’s time to continue the story. Rebels rewatch! How do Maul and Ahsoka’s storylines play out now that we know all that extra stuff? Which characters survive to show up in The Mandalorian? If everyone’s hunch is correct, boning up on Rebels before the end of October might be a smart call.
Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy [4k UHD] [Blu-ray]
$42.99
Back to the Future is older now than 1955 was back when the first film came out. So much so that the trilogy’s alternate 1985 turned out a much better prediction of 2020 than its “2015” did. Enjoy the saga again in crystal clear UHD, with an additional hour of all-new features spotlighting the stage musical adaptation and more. Even though it’s triply dated, the story and characters still hold up and win over new fans. Because…that’s the power of love.
DC’s Stargirl: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray + Digital Copy)
$22.99
With a cosmic staff and a stepfather who pilots a giant robot, a teenage girl reforms the Justice Society of America for a new generation. But will she prove ready for the supervillains who emerge to challenge her? The show aired on both DC Universe and the CW, but for anyone who missed both, or just wants to revisit, the Blu-ray is here.
Doctor Who: The Complete David Tennant Collection (Blu-ray)
$22.75
Fourteen discs and fifty-some episodes featuring the man who arguably cemented nu-Who’s position in pop culture again. The Tennant years also saw the transition of the BBC into high-definition, so the later episodes look a lot cleaner than the upconversions. Revisit Cybermen, Daleks, Weeping Angels and all the rest, alongside Rose Tyler and the return of Sarah Jane Smith and K-9. Heck of a deal for under $25.
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete Fourth Season (Blu-ray)
$12.99
Per the official synopsis, “After defeating the demon Mallus by cuddling him to death, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow join John Constantine and Ava Sharpe’s Time Bureau to save their world – and their legacy – from magical creatures from myths, fairytales and legends who have infected history. As the Legends time-travel across historical events and encounter famous figures, they now have an added shot of magical craziness!”
Ultraman Ace – The Complete Series [Blu-ray]
$17.24
“Alternate Dimension Being Yapool started invading Earth with an entourage of Terrible-Monsters that were more powerful than ordinary monsters. The Terrestrial Defense Force was annihilated. Ultraman Ace has been sent from Nebula M78 Land of Light.”
Got it?
12 Monkeys – The Complete Series [Blu-ray]
$32.99
Based on the Terry Gilliam film that was based on the French short “La Jetee,” 12 Monkeys expands the story of a time traveler who seeks a way to fight the virus that has decimated his future. Hmm, perhaps this feels even closer to home now than it ought to. Any time travelers reading this now?
Batman: Death in the Family (Blu-ray + Digital)
$19.99
Relive one of the biggest comics controversies of the ’80s, when DC let fans vote on whether Jason Todd should live or die. In this interactive movie, whoever controls the TV remote controls Jason’s fate! Three possible endings await. Bonus features include four previously released one-shot animated shorts, now with added director commentary.
The Witches [Blu-ray]
$17.99
Before the remake comes to HBO, pick up the original disturbing masterpiece of dark fantasy. Roald Dahl’s darkest undertones get brought to the fore by master of suspense Nicolas Roeg, though the director smartly tones down the ending to make it less depressing. Unavailable in most stores, the Blu-ray is a made-to-order part of the Warner Archive Collection.
TOY STORY 4 UHD [Blu-ray]
$19.70
Quite possibly the best Toy Story sequel, it’s the first one made by the Gen X’ers who really turned toy collecting into the big deal it became. Woody and Buzz finally part ways, and yes, it’s emotional, but in a way that feels more honest than some of Pixar’s other gratuitous tear-jerks. And Keanu Reeves as Duke Caboom is more like the real, unaffected Reeves in person than any of his other performances have ever been.
