Dark Phoenix Director Simon Kinberg Will Write a Battlestar Galactica Movie

The 2003 Battlestar Galactica reboot had a recurring expression: All this has happened before, and all this will happen again.” It’s proven to be true outside of the show as well. While Peacock has its own Battlestar Galactica revival in the works, a new extension of the franchise is in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Simon Kinberg has been signed to write and produce a Battlestar Galactica feature film. Dylan Clark will also produce the movie with Kinberg.

Kinberg was one of the driving forces behind Fox’s X-Men movies as a writer and a producer. He wrote or co-wrote X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. He also went on to direct the Dark Phoenix movie that closed out the franchise.

According to THR, Kinberg’s movie is “starting from the ground up.” Presumably that means it’s unconnected to either version of the TV series. However, it will retain the premise of humanity on the run in space as the Cylons attempt to annihilate them.

Battlestar Galactica is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what’s made it so iconic and enduring,” said Kinberg in a statement. “I’m so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe.”

Universal hasn’t named a director, nor set a start date yet.
