One of Sweet Tooth’s supporting cast members is going to have a larger role on the show than previously thought. According to Deadline, Aliza Vellani has been upped to series regular on Netflix’s adaptation of Jeff Lemire’s comic book series.
Vellani will appear on the series as Rani Singh, “the warm and loving wife of Dr. Singh, who must find her fortitude to survive in a post-pandemic world.” Adeel Akhtar is playing Dr. Singh on the show.
As both writer and artist, Lemire published 40 issues of Sweet Tooth through Vertigo between 2009 and 2013. The series follows Gus, a human with deer-like features who wanders a post-apocalyptic wasteland accompanied by several other human-animal hybrids.
Most of Vellani’s onscreen work has been in TV. Over the last few years, she has appeared on episodes of The Twilight Zone, Riverdale, The Flash, and Supernatural, to name a few shows. She also voiced Ms. Marvel on two episodes of Disney’s Marvel Super Hero Adventures animated series.

Hulu originally ordered a pilot for Sweet Tooth in 2018. However, the project eventually moved to Netflix, who officially ordered it to series back in May. Christian Convery will headline the show as Gus, with a supporting cast that also includes Will Forte, Nonso Anozie, Dania Ramirez, and more. James Brolin will serve as the series’ narrator.
Sweet Tooth began filming in New Zealand earlier this year after being granted a border exemption by the country’s government amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Netflix has yet to set a premiere date for the series.
