Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole Confirm Their Exit From Doctor Who

Earlier this month, Doctor Who finally began production on its thirteenth season. However, a pair of key cast members have revealed that they won’t be coming along for the ride. In a new interview found on the show’s official website, Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole confirmed long-standing rumors that they will be leaving Doctor Who after the Revolution of the Daleks special airs on New Year’s Day.

Walsh and Cole joined the cast at the beginning of the series eleventh season, which also marked Jodie Whittaker’s first full episode as the Thirteenth Doctor. Their characters, Graham O’Brien (Walsh), and Graham’s step-grandson, Ryan Sinclair (Cole), were introduced as two of the Doctor’s newest companions. They were also joined by Mandip Gill’s Yasmin Khan, who will remain with the series after Walsh and Cole’s departure. During his time on the series, Cole received praise from the disabled community for his performance as Ryan, who struggles with dyspraxia.

Because the upcoming New Year’s special marks their last trip in the TARDIS, viewers can expect emotions to run high. Regardless, Cole admitted that he was “looking forward to having a rest.”

“It is very, very dramatic,” added Walsh. “It is quite sad and poignant is the word. You can expect a lot of poignancy from the episode.”

Both actors also shared what they will miss the most about working on the series.

“Working in Wales with everyone on the crew,” said Walsh. “I have absolutely loved it, loved it. Wales has become like a second home to me and being included in something so iconic and ground-breaking with the advent of having a female Doctor, that whole thing where [showrunner Chris] Chibnall sold that to me, it didn’t disappoint. And I loved working with those guys.”

“There are too many things to list here,” said Cole. “But it has to be the team on the screen and behind it as well as the amazing fans. It’s been an honour to work on such a cultural institution with fans across the world. The people like me on the screen come and go, but it’s the people behind the scenes and the fans that will always be there keeping the Doctor Who world alive and exciting.”

Revolution of the Daleks premieres on BBC America on January 1.
