There’s a lot of hype building for WandaVision’s premiere on Disney+, in part because the show will give us our first clues about what to expect from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. When Kevin Feige announced Marvel’s Phase Four slate at Comic-Con in 2019, he surprised fans when he revealed that the events of WandaVision will directly tie into the upcoming Doctor Strange follow-up, which also has Elizabeth Olsen reprising her role as Wanda Maximoff opposite Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange. The sequel has encountered a few shakeups over the past year, changing everything from its director to its release date. But according to Olsen, the film’s story has undergone its own set of changes, and will continue to do so even when cameras start rolling.
Olsen gave a progress report on Doctor Strange 2 while speaking with Collider about her work on WandaVision. Specifically, she addressed the status of the movie’s screenplay. On previous MCU entries, like the last two Avengers films, it wasn’t unusual for Olsen and her castmates to only receive the script pages that actually featured their characters. But on Multiverse of Madness, the process is a little bit different.
“We always are changing, right?” said Olsen. “Because we’re always giving notes and they are very kind to welcome opinions and thoughts, and so it’s always an evolution even while you’re filming. We definitely have a script. But when I was told I would be in it, I had no idea what it was gonna be. I just knew I was gonna be in Doctor Strange 2. And it wasn’t only until before we even went back to finish WandaVision during the pandemic that I found out what I am doing in Doctor Strange 2. [Laughs] But it’s kind of nice to not know! You just kind of trust everyone and then you bring your experience of the character to it. And people welcome changes once you become more involved.”

Originally, Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson was going to return to the director’s chair for Multiverse of Madness. But last year, he left the sequel over creative differences. Marvel then turned to Sam Raimi, the director of the original Spider-Man trilogy. Raimi also knows a thing or two about making horror movies thanks to his work on the Evil Dead franchise. And when asked if Raimi will infuse the sequel with his own scary flavor, Olsen implied that this will indeed be the case.
“He’s an incredible person to work with,” continued Olsen. “He’s just such a unique human and I just think it’s fun getting to work with someone with such specific goals. And I love his use of camera and it’s definitely a use of camera that I’m not used to at all. So I guess that might answer your question!”
