The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Composer Hints At Series’ Complex Themes

WandaVision is happily breaking away from the typical bombastic flavor of the MCU. But it looks like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will give fans more of the VFX-heavy action sequences we all know and love. Beyond this, the show also presents a unique opportunity to explore real-world social issues. As expected, this will stem from Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson taking over for Steve Rogers as the new Captain America. In a new interview with FilmSpeak, series composer Henry Jackman teased how the show will address these themes.

Jackman  previously worked with Marvel on Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. But with a Black character adopting the mantle, the story takes on an entirely different dimension. According to Jackman, Marvel has no intention of glossing over it.

“Having six hourly episodes, that’s more real estate than one of [the films],” said Jackman. “There’s a bit more opportunity to go into psychological drama and explore backstories. And in this particular series, there’s very much serious issues, now more than ever, about what it means to hold [Cap’s] shield and what kind of a person should ultimately be holding that shield, and with the history of this country, and how African Americans would feel about being Captain America or not. It’s still entertaining, but it touches on less comfortable things that give rise to some really impressive performances. It’s a great balance of entertainment and writing [centering] around more weighty issues.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier hits Disney+ on March 19.
