Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Adds Indira Varma To the Cast

Finally, Lucasfilm’s highly-anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff is fleshing out its supporting cast. Deadline brings word that another Game of Thrones alum is about to join the Star Wars universe. Indira Varma has just booked a role on the series opposite Ewan McGregor’s titular Jedi Master. Unfortunately, her character’s identity remains a secret for now.

Varma appeared throughout Game of Thrones’ last four seasons as Ellaria Sand. Her character was introduced as the lover of Oberyn Martell (played by future Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal) and mother to several of his daughters, known as the Sand Snakes. Some of Varma’s more recent TV credits include gigs on Amazon’s Carnival Row and ABC’s For Life. She also lends her voice to the U.K.’s revival of ITV’s Spitting Image puppet show.

The Obi-Wan spinoff hit a major speedbump last year when its original writer, Hossein Amini, stepped down from the series. Reports blamed his departure on creative differences with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, which prompted a shift in the show’s production timetable. The studio eventually recruited writer Joby Harold to re-tool the story. Filming is expected to begin later this spring, with Deborah Chow sitting in the director’s chair.

Back in December, Kennedy revealed new details about the series during Disney’s Investor Day presentation. Among other announcements, she confirmed that Hayden Christensen will also reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, teasing a rematch between his and McGregor’s characters following their climactic battle in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. McGregor also confirmed that the Obi-Wan spinoff will make use of The Mandalorian’s cutting-edge StageCraft technology.
