Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam Movie Starts Filming Next Month

If not for the coronavirus, Dwayne Johnson would have spent last summer shooting Black Adam, and New Line would be premiering the film this December. Unfortunately, the ongoing pandemic kept us from seeing Shazam’s archnemesis on the big screen this year. But after numerous delays, there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Nearly seven years after signing on to play the character, Johnson will finally suit up as Black Adam in April.

Executive producer Hiram Garcia shared the news during a recent interview with ComicBook.com. He also revealed that filming will take place in Georgia. And while the shoot is happening later than expected, the cast and crew sound excited to get underway.

“Obviously, you know how passionate we are about this project,” said Garcia. “This is very special to us. And you know, not only Black Adam, but JSA, and all these characters we’re introducing to the world. And what we want to do with it, we’re just… Look, we were supposed to have been filming last year. COVID delayed everyone when it kinda got in the way. But we’re happy we’re able to pause, regroup, and now we’re going to be getting going. And by April, we’ll be shooting and on track to bring this thing home.”

At last summer’s DC FanDome event, Johnson confirmed that the Justice Society will play a major role in Black Adam. Since then, the filmmakers have cast Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. However, the producers have yet to announce an actor for Dr. Fate, the last JSA member who needs to be cast. Marwan Kenzari and Sarah Shahi also have mystery roles in the film.

Additionally, Garcia teased what it was like to see Johnson try on his Black Adam costume, and he promises that fans won’t be disappointed.

“The guy’s a walking superhero, right?” continued Garcia. “And if there was ever anyone born to play a character, it’s him. We’ve been developing Black Adam who knows how many… I feel like it’s been close to like a decade at this point we’ve been talking about this. And you see him in that and you’re like, ‘That’s him, that’s why we’ve been waiting, that’s why we’ve been working so hard to make this happen.’ This guy is Black Adam and he is going to change the DC Universe, buddy. He’s gonna change that thing.”

Black Adam is still without a release date.
