HBO Announces the Start of Production on House of the Dragon

Saddle up, because it’s time to return to Westeros. After spending the last few months filling out the cast for its inaugural Game of Thrones spinoff, HBO is now one step closer to rolling the cameras. Earlier today, the network announced that its House of the Dragon prequel series has finally entered production.

To confirm the news, the official House of the Dragon Twitter account also posted several images from an early (and socially-distanced) table read for the show. Additionally, the photos feature several key cast members from the series. You can check them out for yourself below.

Set 300 years before Game of Thrones, the new series will trace the history of the Targaryen clan. Paddy Considine is headlining House of the Dragon as Viserys I, the new King of Westeros who struggles to live up to his family legacy. Matt Smith is also co-starring as Viserys’ younger brother, Prince Daemon Targaryen, who may offer some resistance to Viserys’ claim to the throne. Also among the cast is Emma D’Arcy as the King’s first-born daughter, Princess Rhaenyra.

Additionally, Steve Toussaint will play Lord Corlys Velaryon, whose “Sea Snake” moniker is the result of being the most famed nautical adventurer in Westeros’ history. Rhys Ifans is Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, while Olivia Cooke is playing his daughter, Alicent. The series’ cast also includes Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, and Fabien Frankel.

House of the Dragon will premiere on HBO in 2022.
