Astra Gets Animated In DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 Trailer

The time-travelling, reality-warping nature of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has always enabled the series to do things other Arrowverse shows can’t. But this year, it looks like the show is officially tossing the rule book out the Waverider’s window. The CW has just premiered a brand new trailer for Legends’ sixth season, and it’s even more out-there than ever before.

Season 5 memorably ended with Caity Lotz’s Sara getting abducted by aliens. In order to bring her home, the remaining Legends add a new recruit: Esperanza “Spooner” Cruz (Lisseth Chavez). She claims to have a vast knowledge of extraterrestrial societies. Along the way, the team will encounter plenty of new threats, lots of which are inspired by campy B-movies of decades past.

Entertainment Weekly recently spoke with Legends co-showrunner Phil Klemmer about the show’s highly-anticipated return. During their conversation, he revealed new details about the season’s primary antagonist, Bishop, a “mad genius” played by Raffi Barsoumian.

“We do have a big bad who has had his sights on Sara for a long time,” said Klemmer. “Sara is not being targeted as a victim, but to be turned into a partner. Our big bad, at least, purports to have altruistic reasons for saving humanity. He thinks Sara is instrumental for that…It’s not a romantic fascination. Even if Sara is able to escape his clutches, this isn’t the sort of guy that’s going to give up on his plan. Even though she might escape her kidnapping, she’s going to be dealing with the aftermath for the whole season.”

The trailer takes fans everywhere from the Old West to the far reaches of space. Additionally, season 6 will feature a Disney-inspired episode that turns Astra (Olivia Swann) into an animated princess. According to Klemmer, the producers enlisted animators who worked on ‘90s Disney films to bring the episode to life. Viewers can also expect to hear some catchy songs as well.

Legends of Tomorrow season 6 premieres on Sunday, May 2 on The CW.
