Justin Roiland Teases His New Rick and Morty Spinoff Series, The Vindicators

Last month, Adult Swim announced that a Rick and Morty spinoff featuring The Vindicators will launch as a series of digital shorts. Now, days ahead of the fifth season premiere of Rick and Morty, series star and co-creator, Justin Roiland, is shedding some light on what to expect from the spinoff.

Rick and Morty‘s third season introduced the team in the episode “Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender.” At first glance, the superteam appeared to be a parody of both the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, the episode subsequently revealed the darker secrets that the team was hiding. The majority of the team was also killed off in their lone appearance. Regardless, Roiland told The Wrap that the spinoff won’t be deterred by those events. Additionally, it will expand on the team’s doomed mission to Dorian 5, which led them to exterminate an entire world.

“I can’t remember if it was the network that suggested it or if it was actually Erica [Rosbe] and Sarah [Carbiener], who wrote the [‘Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender’] script in season 3,” recalled Roiland. “But to me it was like, yeah that’s a really cool place to go for a spinoff, especially with how big Marvel is and the superhero genre in general is. We had fun with the idea that the episode was the third Vindicators mission and that Rick and Morty had only been invited to one. So they’re like, ‘Wait a minute, you guys did one without us?’ And there is all this backstory to go into.”

Roiland also added that he doesn’t “want to say too much right now just because I don’t know how much is going to change or how crazy it’s going to get. But I do know it’s really cool that we’re getting to do it.”

The Vindicators will consist of eight to ten short form episodes. According to Roiland, that may be the equivalent of a full Rick and Morty episode.

“I could be mistaken about this,” noted Roiland. “But I think the full run of it is about the length of a full episode of Rick and Morty. It might be longer than that, but I’m pretty sure that’s about what it comes out to be. So it’s almost like an additional episode when it’s put all together.”

It’s also unclear if the original Vindicators voice cast will return for the new spinoff. Christian Slater voiced Vance Maximus, while Lance Reddick portrayed Alan Rails. Gillian Jacobs also appeared as Supernova alongside Maurice LaMarche as Crocubot, and Tom Kenny as Million Ants.
