Nearly three years ago, Sony’s first Venom movie weathered a storm of critical backlash to become a rousing financial success. It also broke several October records in the process. Many of those records were broken by Joker a year later. But now, Marvel’s symbiotic anti-hero is getting a chance to reclaim box office glory from the Clown Prince of Crime.
According to Variety, Sony has once again pushed back the release date for Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Instead of hitting theaters on September 24, the sequel will now arrive on October 15.
The studio’s decision comes amid a recent uptake in coronavirus cases. Although the availability of vaccines led to an increase in ticket sales, the emergence of new COVID variants has shaken moviegoers’ confidence in theater safety. It also doesn’t help that vaccination rates seem to be on the decline. As a result, several parts of the country are once again implementing mask mandates and other social distancing protocols.

Let There Be Carnage was originally slated to hit theaters in October 2020. But as the virus continued to spread, Sony delayed the film to this past June before ultimately landing on its previous September release date.
The movie now faces some pretty stiff competition with its new October premiere. On the same day, Universal will release Halloween Kills starring Jamie Lee Curtis. Meanwhile, 20th Century Studios will open Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel.
