Michael Giacchino Offers an Update on Marvel’s Werewolf by Night

News that Marvel’s Werewolf by Night will be making his live-action debut in a Halloween special on Disney+ took a lot of fans by surprise when it was announced last summer. But it was even more surprising when Michael Giacchino was named the director. The Oscar-winning composer has scored several MCU features over the years, and he is stepping behind the camera for the special. Now, Giacchino has shared a brief update about the project.

Giacchino confirmed his involvement with Werewolf by Night during a recent interview with ComicBook.com. Technically, the special isn’t Giacchino’s first directing credit. He previously released his own short film, Monster Challenge, in 2018. The following year, he also helmed the “Ephraim and Dot” episode of Star Trek: Short Treks season 2. Directing for Marvel Studios is a different beast altogether. But it sounds like Giacchino is embracing the prospect of trying something new.

“I’ve been having a blast,” said Giacchino. “It’s an incredibly challenging process. I love it. Everyday, I’ve been having fun working on it and we’re in the middle of it. Hopefully, very soon we’ll share a lot more about it. Yeah. There’s not much I can’t say other than I’m having a good time and I am working on something that I love. So, that’s a win-win right there.”

Gael García Bernal is headlining Werewolf by Night as the title character, making him the first Latino actor to star in an MCU project. However, it’s not clear which version of the werewolf he’s playing. The original Werewolf by Night was the alter-ego of Jack Russell, who transformations were caused by a family curse. Years later, Marvel introduced a new lycanthropic hero, Jake Gomez, a Native American whose own family was plagued by a similar fate. So far, the only other confirmed cast member is The Nevers’ Laura Donnelly, who might be playing Nina Prince, a.k.a. Vampire by Night.

Marvel hasn’t announced a release date for Werewolf by Night. But according to rumors, the special will premiere on Disney+ sometime in October.
