Nova MCU Project in Early Development, Marvel Confirms

Marvel Studios has confirmed that a Nova project is in early development.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, Brad Winderbaum, the head of streaming, animation, and television for Marvel Studios, confirmed that the company is currently in “early development” on a Nova project.

“We love Nova,” Winderbaum said, “We are in really early development on Nova.”

Winderbaum continued, “We have a new system behind-the-scenes at Marvel Studios. We’re more like a traditional studio now. We’re developing more than we actually will produce. There are plans to develop Nova. I love Nova, too. I love Rich Rider, too. I hope it gets to the screen. The world is always chaos. There are always things. You gotta conjure these things to make them happen but I would love to see a Nova show, one day.”

Who is Nova/Richard Rider?

Created by Marv Wolfman and John Romita Sr., Richard Rider debuted in 1976’s The Man Called Nova #1. Richard is a member of the Nova Corps, a cosmic police force introduced into the MCU in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Richard comes from Xander, a planet that was decimated by Thanos (Josh Brolin) in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. While Richard has yet to make his official MCU debut, his origin story could very well tie into Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Marvel also introduced a younger Nova character, Sam Alexander, in 2011, who was created by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness. It’s currently unclear if Sam would also be part of the aforementioned Nova project that’s being developed.

Kevin Feige has hinted that the studio was interested in making a Nova project before. He told ComicBook’s Phase Zero podcast in 2021, “Timing is relative, right? I think I’d been talking about Doctor Strange eight years before that movie came out. So, ‘immediate potential’ is relative. But clearly, we are not shying away from the cosmic end of storytelling right in the sweet spot of the Nova Corps and Nova himself.”
