NYCC 2018: BBC Welcomes Jodie Whittaker To New York With a Doctor Who Simulcast

NYCC 2018: New Doctor Who Previewed with Global Simulcast, Q&A

This year’s New York Comic-Con went out not with a bang, but with the sound of Cloister Bells. The star and producers of Doctor Who visited New York for a global simulcast of the season premiere. The episode marks actress Jodie Whittaker’s proper debut as the Thirteenth Doctor. More notably, it’s the first time the role has been played by a woman in the show’s 55-year history.

A Q&A session followed the screening featuring Whittaker, Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall, and executive producer Matt Stevens. The panel notably touched upon the design of Whittaker’s wardrobe, and the historical figures she may encounter on her cosmic travels. According to Chibnall, we can expect a run-in with civil rights hero Rosa Parks in episode 3.

A number of fans have praised the general inclusivity being presented by this new version of the show. This is demonstrated not just by the casting of a female lead, but also by having the Doctor’s companion, Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole), suffer from dyspraxia. Chibnall’s nephew has the same learning disability. “We did a lot of research into that, we worked with the Dyspraxia Foundation,” said Chibnall via Metro. it was important, because people live with these things. It’s a relatively common thing among kids, so I think it’s important to see that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. That’s the most important thing about Doctor Who and you will see that [idea] happen a lot across this year.”

BBC America has also released a short teaser of next week’s Doctor Who episode, “The Ghost Monument,” along with a video spotlighting the guest stars set to make appearances this season. The list includes Mark Addy, Alan Cumming, Chris Noth, and Phyllis Logan. Additionally, the group announced that the series is partnering up with Mattel to produce a Barbie based on Whittaker’s likeness. The doll will be available to order on Hot Topic’s website beginning at midnight tonight.
