Darby Stanchfield Joins Netflix’s Locke & Key Series

Deadline is reporting that Darby Stanchfield has been cast in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Locke & Key. She’ll play Nina Locke, mother of Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke, on the new series based on the acclaimed IDW comic book.

Stanchfield starred as Abby Whelan on the ABC series Scandal from 2012 until 2018. She also had a five-episode stint on AMC’s Mad Men. Prior to this, she appeared on several episodes of CBS’ short-lived post-apocalyptic series Jericho. Stanchfield will next appear in the Disney+ film Stargirl, based on the Jerry Spinelli novel of the same name.

In Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s original comic, Nina Locke is widowed following her husband Rendell’s murder. After Rendell’s funeral, she relocates her family to Lovecraft Massachusetts to live in Rendell’s ancestral home, Keyhouse Manor. Her children soon discover that the mansion is home to several keys that possess magical abilities.

Stanchfield joins a cast that already includes Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, and Jackson Robert Scott as Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode, respectively. When a Locke & Key pilot episode was made for the Fox network in 2011, the role of Nina was played by Miranda Otto. Frances O’Connor was set to play the character when Hulu began developing the series in 2017. However, when the show changed hands to Netflix, the streaming service decided to start the casting process from scratch.

Hill is co-writing the new Locke & Key pilot with Aron Eli Coleite, who developed the show with Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill. Cuse and Averill are showrunning the series, which doesn’t have a release date yet. Filming begins in Toronto next week.
