On television, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been Marvel’s biggest success story. It’s had a five season run on ABC, with two more seasons yet to come. Despite steadily declining ratings, the show has managed to stay afloat thanks to bolder storytelling risks and impressive action sequences. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. According to Clark Gregg, the agents will carry out their final mission in 2020.
Via Den of Geek, Gregg commented on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s future during a press junket for Captain Marvel.
“That’s the word I’ve heard,” said Gregg. “The announcement I read was, two more seasons, six and seven.” However, Gregg was quick to point out that plans for season 7 are still a mystery even to him. “I can’t wait for people to see Season 6,” continued Gregg. “People who have been on the journey with me and with Phil Coulson are going to get something very, very different.”

Gregg’s role in Captain Marvel marks his first MCU film appearance since his character was killed by Loki in The Avengers. When asked if this might lead to Coulson appearing in more movies down the line, Gregg didn’t rule out the possibility.
“I feel so grateful for the journey that I’ve had, that I’m hesitant to ask for anything,” said Gregg. “I’ll never say no when the Marvel Universe calls up. I feel very grateful for what I’ve done.”
ABC recently announced that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 will premiere in May. Last week, Gregg’s co-star, Ming-Na Wen (Melinda May), announced on Instagram that filming has just begun for the seventh season.
