Nickelodeon Confirms New Animated Star Trek Series

Back in February, word broke that a new animated Star Trek series was in the works at Nickelodeon. Now, Nickelodeon has made it official. Per a report from Variety, Nickelodeon has ordered the new series from CBS Television Studios. But unlike the classic animated Star Trek series, it will be a CGI animated show.

According to the report, the series will “follow a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.”

Kevin and Dan Hageman will produce the series. They previously worked together on Trollhunters and Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu. Additionally, Eye Animation productions, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment are collaborating on the project.

Star Trek, Nickelodeon and the state of animation are doing incredibly ambitious things as of late,” said the Hagemans in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited to jump aboard.”

Alex Kurtzman will serve as an executive producer of the series, alongside Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Aaron Baiers and Katie Krentz.

Star Trek’s mission is to inspire generations of dreamers to build a brighter future. Dan and Kevin have crafted a story that honors its exploratory spirit in a way that’s never been done before, while the Nickelodeon team blew us away with their excitement at bringing ‘Trek’ to a younger generation around the world,” said Kurtzman.

This is the latest Star Trek series to join the CBS fold. The hit show Star Trek: Discovery recently wrapped its second season on All Access. And production has just begun on a new series featuring Captain Picard, with Sir Patrick Stewart back in the role. A show based on Michelle Yeoh’s Discovery character is also in planning stages.

The Star Trek animated series doesn’t currently have a release date, but we should know more in the months ahead.
