Star Trek: Discovery Cast Explains Why Picard Is a Legend

Production is in full swing for CBS All Access’ new Star Trek series, focusing on the iconic Captain Picard. Patrick Stewart will once again portray his legendary character, alongside a number of new characters. Last week, fans got confirmation of the show’s title, Star Trek: Picard, along with a glimpse at early footage. As a follow-up, the official Star Trek YouTube channel has posted a new video over the weekend.

The video features Star Trek: Discovery cast members explaining why Picard is such a legend. Although it’s a bit short, it does provide some explanation about why Stewart’s character so special. It doesn’t debut any footage from the new series, but it does feature clips from Star Trek: The Next Generation which show Picard at his very best.

The performers also note that Picard’s “thoughtfulness” and “incredible decency” define his character. Additionally, they praised Stewart’s performance in the role, noting his “old-school Royal Shakespeare gravitas.”

It serves as a neat blast from the past for die hard Star Trek fans, while also providing a taste of his glory days from Next Generation. This sets the stage for Stewart’s grand return to the role.

Star Trek: Picard will feature a new cast including Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway, and Isa Briones. Hanelle Culpepper will direct the first two episodes of the series. Star Trek: The Next Generation veteran Jonathan Frakes will also helm a pair of episodes as well. There’s currently no word about whether Frakes’ character, Will Riker, will make a return.

There’s no word on a premiere date just yet, but Star Trek: Picard is expected to beam down later this year.
