Emmy-Nominated Game of Thrones Star Submitted Herself

Ser Brianne of Tarth is definitely an unconventional character in Game of Thrones, and the actress playing her is no exception. Although HBO didn’t submit her for Emmy consideration, Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie took her fate into her own hands and did it by herself. She was right eventually, as she made it as a finalist for the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy Award.

“I couldn’t be more delighted, this is the best day ever,” Christie said to Variety. “It’s amazing so many of us have been nominated, I’m delighted for everybody. It’s a show we worked on for nearly 10 years, it’s meant so much to so many of us. I honestly couldn’t feel more overwhelmed, privileged and heartened that people want to see more unconventional female storylines. I’m so excited for Kit and Emilia and Maisie and Alfie, and Nikolaj congratulated me this morning. It feels like a celebration.”

Christie will run against some fellow Game of Thrones stars, such as Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams. Additionally, she will face Julia Garner from Netflix’s Ozark and Fiona Shaw from Killing Eve. Christie surely starts as an underdog in the final rush, with Maisie Williams as favorite. Yet Christie could eventually surprise everybody and take home the extremely coveted award. After all, Brienne of Tarth had to deal with a lot of different emotions in the eighth and final season of the series.

Following her example, Christie’s co-worker Alfie Allen and Carice Van Houten submitted themselves too. And both stars won their bet in the end. Carice Van Houten is running for the Guest Actress in a Drama Series Award. Allen, meanwhile, made it to the final rush for the Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Emmy. He will face Nikolaj Coster-Waldeau and Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones. Plus, Jonathan Banks and Giancarlo Esposito from Better Call Saul, House of Cards‘ Michael Kelly and Chris Sullivan from This Is Us got a nomination too.
