Star Trek: Picard Producer Reveals the Captain Isn’t Returning to Starfleet

With the upcoming CBS All Access’ series Star Trek: Picard around the corner, Star Trek fans have a lot on their plate this year. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Star Trek: Picard producer Alex Kurtzman and showrunner Michael Chabon revealed a lot of juicy details on the series focused on the Captain of the starship USS Enterprise-D. Now we know that even though Picard will go to space eventually “in a way that anyone expects,” he won’t return to Starfleet. And he will have to deal with things in a completely different way.

“Because he’s no longer in Starfleet, he no longer carries the weight of that behind him,” Kurtzman said. “In some ways, it’s easier to be [a great man] when you’re a captain. But it’s an entirely different thing when you don’t have an army behind you. When you want to get something done and fight an injustice, how do you do that when you’re really only one man?”

Then Kurtzman added that many things are haunting Picard, such as the ill-fated Romulus mission. In spite of this, Star Trek fans will be able to recognize the old character they learnt to love.

“It was terribly important to us that he remains fundamentally Picard,” Kurtzman added. “You will not see a version that betrays the man we loved from Next Generation. We’re not doing that. But we wanted to put a character with that level of morality and leadership and who always does the right thing no matter how hard the circumstances … we wanted to put that to the test.”

Additionally, Chabon teased that fans will see Patrick Stewart at his best and they might get the chance to see other Next Generation actor appearances.
