There were many questions in regards to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. surrounding what would happen after its sixth season, which is currently in full swing. But it looks like fans finally have their answer – and they should prepare for their final hurrah soon enough.
In conjunction with the show’s official Twitter account, Deadline confirmed that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would get a seventh season next summer. Following that, it will officially come to a close.
“Next summer’s Season 7 will be the last for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” the show’s tweet said. “Thanks to our fans for allowing us to be the longest-running Marvel TV series-to-date.”
Clark Gregg, who stars as Agent Coulson on the series, also expressed praise for the show’s avid fanbase. “The gratitude we feel for the army of incredible fans/friends/agents who gave us this epic journey is difficult to express. It’s a show about a family and you are ours. Thank you.”
“When you know that’s what you’re doing, you can take greater risks, of life and death,” Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb explained to Deadline, following the decision to conclude the series. “Those kinds of decisions suddenly now are real on the table because you’re not playing how do we undo this when we get to the next season. You’re playing that this is going to be the end of the story.”

Loeb also explained the importance of ending Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on proper terms, even in the face of Marvel TV’s growth with Disney+. “Well, the bitter side is nobody ever wants anything to end, but it’s going to be amazing, and here’s the best news: Season 6 isn’t over, and you’ve seen none of Season 7. That’s the celebration, there’s still more. It’s not as though we’re going to walk off the stage and say goodbye, you’re never going to see another one of these new stories again. You have to see how this ends, you have to.”
Loeb was then asked why the show simply didn’t end with Season 5, with the “death” of Agent Coulson. “The simplest answer is so that we can end on our terms, really.”
The full interview can be found here. And more details about what’s to come will likely be available once the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. panel takes place later today during the official San Diego Comic-Con panel. It begins at 3:30 PM PDT in Hall H.
