Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 Episode 12 Recap

Things are ramping up as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. winds down its sixth season. With Sarge back in the good yet extremely cautious graces of the other agents, the crew readied to descend upon Izel’s temple. But they might be too late. Using the gravitonium device to spawn Flint from Yo-Yo and Mack’s fear is just what Izel needed to rebuild the monoliths and open her gate. The finish line was in sight for both forces as things began to culminate in the jungle with plenty of surprises left to unfold. Cutting out what ails you is never that easy.

Reconstruction

The shock of reconstitution leaves Flint in a state of shock. Seeing Mack and Yo-Yo only heightens it. Izel’s curiosity about why his friends fear him is answered when Flint builds a stone spike and tries to kill Izel. She stops the attack and takes Flint’s body to begin rebuilding the monoliths. The task completed, Izel relinquishes Flint and leaves the temple to gather an army of Shrike-infected humans. Flint uses that time to free Yo-Yo and Mack and try to understand how he wound up there. Izel soon returns, using Yo-Yo to shatter Flint’s leg. Izel is keeping the trio around for the first three through the gate to inhabit.

The rest of S.H.I.E.L.D. prepare to assault the temple with some new anti-Shrike tech. They load up on anti-Izel barriers and Shrike-killing bullets for the mission. But Sarge is unsure about his ability to control the force within him. There’s no thought inside his mind; only rage. May reassures him that he is in control, though that belief is mainly motivated by her desire to exorcise the demon within him in hopes that Coulson will remain afterward. The group land in the jungle, retake the Zephyr and set out into the jungle to find Izel.

Jungle Jumping

Deke, Fitz and Simmons try to devise a way to help the team get to Izel easier. Deke has just the device, but he exposes his secret R&D team in the process. He’s been developing a wearable jump drive, though it amounts to little more than stolen S.H.I.E.L.D. tech. This angers Fitz, but he and Simmons agree to help him get it up and running. That doesn’t keep Fitz from berating his grandson, calling him a hack. Deke is finally pushed to his boiling point, revealing that he built his company out of loneliness and an overwhelming sense of loss and displacement. He straps on the jump drive and teleports into the temple, delivering barriers to Yo-Yo and Mack. He gives his own barrier to Flint and helps them escape, getting trapped in the temple in the process.

Daisy, May and Sarge run into a swarm of Shrike in the jungle, making them realize that there are too many to brute force their way to the temple. Daisy runs off to distract the infected as Sarge displays more characteristics of Coulson. She ends up leading the Shrike back to the Zephyr by accident just as Mack and Yo-Yo send Flint off with Piper in the Quinjet. With the Zephyr still unable to lift off, the trio are trapped in the ship as the Shrike overrun it.

Pain Reliever

May and Sarge enter the temple, following Izel’s song, as Deke is finally able to jump into the jungle. Sarge’s physical form grows more unstable as they get closer to her. Izel opens the gate as Sarge arrives to confront her. She recognizes his sword, showing concern that it isn’t of this world before Sarge rears back to plunge it into her. But he can’t do it.

Mack’s concerns about Sarge seem to be true. The most effective devils are the ones that make you believe they can be redeemed. But May wasn’t privy to that conversation. She tries to talk up Sarge, pointing out that the pain he feels is love for her and the team. The kind of love Coulson showed them. Her words convince Sarge of this belief, but he must cut out the pain. He stabs May in the stomach and tosses her through the gate as a sign to Izel’s forces on the other side.

Trouble is brewing in deep space as well. Enoch meets with Isaiah to discuss their plan to rebuild the Chronicom homeworld. But plans have changed. All of the Chronicom anthropologists have been reassigned to Hunter duty, including Isaiah.
