Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons kicked off the Watchmen comic with the murder of the Comedian. Now, Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series has started with a murder of its own and a lot of unanswered questions. Who killed Chief Judd Crawford? Will Reeves (Louis Gossett Jr.) is taking credit for the crime. But could a 105 year old man truly kill Crawford? What’s really going on here?

HBO’s new Watchmen season 1 trailer formally introduces Jean Smart as FBI agent Laurie Blake. In the comic, she was Laurie Juspeczyk, the second Silk Spectre. Now, she’s investigating Crawford’s death alongside Angela Abar. Meanwhile, the series is still playing coy about whether Jeremy Irons is playing Ozymandias. Regardless, he’s up to his old tricks again and talking about using fear as a weapon.
However, the core of the new conspiracy apparently revolves around characters we haven’t met yet. But that doesn’t mean more familiar faces aren’t on the way. A scene late in the trailer strongly implies that Doctor Manhattan is back on Earth, and he’s essentially cosplaying as himself.
Watchmen airs Sundays on HBO.
