Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Gets a New Showrunner

Last month, CBS confirmed that it would bring back Star Trek: Picard for a second season — even before the series premiere. Now, there’s confirmation of who will direct guide Picard into his new adventures. During the Television Critics Association Winter 2020 event, CBS’ Julie McNamara announced that Terry Matalas will take over as showrunner from Michael Chabon on the second season. Matalas previously worked on the TV adaptation of 12 Monkeys as showrunner and creator.

The energy and excitement around the premiere of Star Trek: Picard has reached a magnitude greater than all of us at CBS All Access could have hoped for,” said McNamara in a statement. “We’re thrilled to announce plans for a second season before the series’ debut, and we are confident that Star Trek fans and new viewers alike will be captured by the stellar cast and creative team’s meticulously crafted story when it premieres on January 23.”

Chabon will step down from his showrunner role to work on his new Showtime project, The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. However, he will remain on board as an executive producer.

For Star Trek: Picard, Patrick Stewart is reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard; which he originated on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Brent Spiner will also reprise his role as Data; with Jonathan Frakes as William T. Riker and Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi making guest appearances. Jeri Ryan will also return as Seven of Nine, from Star Trek: Voyager.

Star Trek: Picard will premiere on CBS All Access on January 23.
