There might be a silver lining even in a world that is changing every day due to the coronavirus emergency. The fans of the literary saga A Song of Ice and Fire could have a pleasant surprise once the storm passes over. Given that he is now forced to stay at home and work, writer George R.R. Martin is focusing on finishing Winds of Winter, the sixth installment in the high fantasy saga.
“I am off by myself in a remote isolated location, attended by one of my staff, and I’m not going in to town or seeing anyone,” Martin wrote on his personal website. “Truth be told, I am spending more time in Westeros than in the real world, writing every day. Things are pretty grim in the Seven Kingdoms… but maybe not as grim as they may become here.”

This is undoubtedly some good news. But fans will recall that this is hardly the first time Martin teased that he is finishing his epic saga. And many of them grow tired of waiting. After all, A Dance of Dragons — the fifth and latest installment in the saga — debuted on July 12, 2011. Nearly ten years after that, fans already saw how the story will end. Or at least they saw the ending imagined by David Benioff and Daniel Brett Weiss for HBO’s Game of Thrones.
But who knows? Maybe Martin will find the time and strength to finish not only Winds of Winter but also A Dream of Spring. In HBO’s series, Bran Stark becomes the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms eventually. Given enough time, could Martin decide to do something different?
