Now that Taika Waititi is an Oscar-winning filmmaker, he’s busier than ever with his return to the MCU, Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as the two Charlie and the Chocolate Factory animated series for Netflix, and the Akira remake that may or may not still be happening. However, there was also the question about whether Waititi would direct more episodes of The Mandalorian. Waititi voiced IG-11 and directed the first season finale; which garnered critical acclaim. Unfortunately, Waititi isn’t coming back to the Star Wars universe anytime soon.
Via ComicBook.com, Waititi was asked about his involvement with The Mandalorian season 2 during his Instagram Live watch party for Thor: Ragnarok. Apparently, Waititi was in the throes of working on his next movie, Next Goal Wins, when The Mandalorian season 2 was in production. That’s why he wasn’t able to return.

The Mandalorian wrapped filming on its second season last month. Lucasfilm still hasn’t shared the full director lineup for the new season. Regardless, showrunner Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni will each helm different episodes.
Waititi may not be returning to The Mandalorian just yet, but Lucasfilm is definitely holding onto his number. Back in January, word broke that the studio was courting Waititi to direct his own Star Wars movie. However, that potential project has yet to come together.
The Mandalorian’s second season will hit Disney+ in October.
